Mustangs Trample Panthers; Augusta Regroups against Ripley, Owen County

On Tuesday night the Augusta Panthers returned home to host the Bishop Brossart Mustangs. The Panthers didn't get off to a very good start at all as Brossart dominated the 1st quarter leading 21-9.  Things didn't get much better in the 2nd quarter as the Mustangs continued their hot shooting to the tune of a 47-19 halftime lead.

The lead continued to grow in the 3rd quarter as Augusta trailed by 30 points going into the 4th.  There would be no running clock though as the Panthers outscored the Mustangs 18-10 in the final frame to make the score a more respectable 74-52.  The loss dropped the Panthers to 8-12.  Austin Eichenberger led Augusta with 13 points and Preston Philpot added 12.

Scoring vs. Brossart: Eichenberger 13, Philpot 12, Appelman 7, Ripato 7, Cordle 6, Mains 5, Reed 2

Augusta welcomed the Ripley Blue Jays to the Panthers Den in a game that was rescheduled due to weather earlier in the season. The 1st quarter was an exciting battle as the two teams ended the first eight minutes all tied up at 16 points apiece.  The Panthers hit their stride in the 2nd quarter jumping out ahead 35-21 before the Blue Jays would close that gap to 36-25 at the break.

Ripley came out determined to make a game of it getting within 7 points a couple of times in the 3rd quarter but each time they thought they were going to overtake the Panthers, Augusta would respond and they pulled out to a 53-41 lead heading into the 4th quarter.  With a 10-0 run to start the 4th quarter the Panthers made it a 63-41 lead before the Blue Jays would close the gap over the course of the quarter and found themselves with an opportunity to get it to single digits but just could not convert while the Panthers hit the necessary free throws to pick up the win, 76-64.  The win improved them to 9-12. Austin Eichenberger led all scorers with 22 points.  He was joined in double figures by Preston Philpot with 18 and Stephen Cordle with 13.

Scoring vs. Ripley:  Eichenberger 22, Philpot 18, Cordle 13, Mains 9, Appelman 7, Ripato 7

The Panthers headed to Owenton, Ky, to face the Owen County Rebels. This would be the first meeting between the two schools since they met in the 2015 All A state tournament, a game that Owen County won.  The Panthers scored early and often in the 1st quarter leading 17-10 heading into the 2nd.  The Rebels weren't just going to go away and closed the gap in the 2nd quarter to 4 as the Panthers led 29-25 at intermission.

The 3rd quarter saw Owen County stay close but Augusta continue to maintain the lead.  It would be 45-39 going into the 4th quarter.  The Rebels would get as close as 3 points at 50-47 but a mix of fast break points and free throws would keep the Panthers ahead and as time ticked away and Augusta picked up their second straight win, 65-58.  The Panthers are now 10-12.  Their eighth straight season of double figure wins. Four Panthers reached double figures.  Stephen Cordle led with 15 points.  Joining him were Thomas Mains with 14, Preston Philpot with 12 and Austin Eichenberger with 11.

Scoring vs. Owen County: Cordle 15, Mains 14, Philpot 12, Eichenberger 11, Ripato 8, Appelman 5
