Panthers Fall to Lewis but Defeat Ludlow on Senior Night

As the season draws to an end, the Augusta Panthers are trying to change their image.  No more running up and down the floor.  Instead, they are looking to slow things down as they prepare for Mason County in the district tournament.  After successfully trying this formula against Villa Madonna they would try at home against Lewis County.  The Panthers would struggle in the 1st quarter as they were only able to score 5 points while giving up 10 to the Lions.  Both teams picked up the scoring pace in the 2nd quarter but the Panthers remained behind, trailing 20-16 at the break.

Things would change for the Panthers in the 3rd quarter.  Augusta used good defense to get results on the offensive end.  The Panthers would take their first lead of the night early in the quarter and continue on a 14-0 run to jump out to a 28-20 lead before the Lions closed the quarter on a 8-2 run of their own to make it 30-28 going in the 4th.  There wasn't much to say about the final quarter for the Panthers as Lewis County held them scoreless.  It wasn't that they didn't try to score, it was that they just were unable to get anything to fall.  The Lions turned that 8-2 run into a 16-2 run to finish the game, winning 44-30.  Preston Philpot led the Panthers with 11 points.  They fell to 11-14 with the loss.

"We got the pace we wanted in this one," said Coach Kirk, "But it takes more than just controlling the pace.  You have to consistently hit shots and we were unable to do that."

Scoring vs. Lewis County: Philpot 11, Appelman 9, Cordle 5, Eichenberger 5

The Panthers would be at home for their regular season finale against the Ludlow Panthers.  Ludlow would get the early jump on Augusta in the 1st quarter leading 11-6.  In the 2nd quarter Augusta would be more successful on the offensive end putting up 11 points but their defense wasn't up to the task giving up 13 points and they trailed 24-17 at the half.

Something happened at the half to turn around Augusta's fortunes because things picked up on the offensive end while the defense came around as well.  Thomas Mains and Austin Eichenberger scored 8 points apiece to help Augusta take the lead going into the final 8 minutes, 40-34.  Augusta would maintain that lead and finish off the visiting Panthers, 62-53.  Stephen Cordle would lead 4 Panthers in double figures with 16 points.  Thomas Mains added 15, Austin Eichenberger had 13, and Preston Philpot chipped in with 10.  The win improved the Panthers to 12-14.

It's good to finish the season with a win going into the district," said Coach Kirk, "We have work to do still but by Monday night, we'll be ready."
