Royals Down Panthers in Distict Semifinals

For the second straight season, and fourth in the last five, the Augusta Panthers would meet the Mason County Royals in the semifinals of the 39th district tournament.  This meeting would take place at the Mason County Fieldhouse.  The Royals pulled down 6 offensive rebounds in the 1st quarter that led to 9 points and helped them to a 18-14 lead.  The 2nd quarter was the difference in this game.  Although the Panthers weren't hot by any stretch in the 1st quarter, they went ice cold in the 2nd.  Shooting 3-13 from the field and 1-6 from the line gave Mason County every opportunity to seize control of the game.  And the Royals did just that going on a 19-3 run pushing out to a 41-22 lead at the break.

In the 3rd quarter Augusta would show some fight holding Mason County to only 12 points but the cold shooting continued so they were unable to make any serious threat on the Royals lead.  The Panthers trailed going into the 4th, 53-32.  The 4th quarter felt like the game was much closer than it was as both teams went up and down the floor scoring 29 points apiece but that didn't help the Panthers at all as they could not threaten the Royals lead and the season would come to an end as they fell, 82-61.  Thomas Mains finished with a career high 21 points.  He was joined in double figures by Cody Ripato with 12 and Austin Eichenberger with 10.  The Panthers finish the season 12-15.

"You never want it to end, at any point, at any level," said Coach Kirk, "We fought hard, all the way to the end but they were the better team tonight.  I'm proud of this team for the strides we made all season.  I wish nothing but the best of luck to our departing seniors.  They are fine young men that will find success in the future."

Scoring vs. Mason County:  Mains 21, Ripato 12, Eichenberger 10, Appelman 6, Philpot 5, Cordle 4, White 3
