Cross Country - Coed Middle School
Augusta MS Cross Country Looking to Use Experience

Augusta’s middle school cross country team is looking to its experienced runners to guide them to success this season.  With nine males and females on the team ranging from fifth to eighth grade, that is a slight increase over last season.

n the girls’ side, 8th grader Emma Young will look to continue the success she has experience at the middle school level.  While middle school races vary in distance, her personal best in the 3K, which is one of the more common distance ran, is 11:38.  Per Kentucky MileSplit, that time ranked the 10th best girls’ 3K time in the state last season.  Young recorded five first place finishes last season and several other top five finishes.  Joining Young as the only other girl will be 6th grader Madisonn Wenz, who competed on the middle school team last season as a 5th grader.

“We’re looking for Emma to continue improving and have success,” Coach Tim Litteral said.    “She ran a 12:10 in our scrimmage meet last week, which I felt was a strong start.  In practice, most of her training is with the varsity team, so that should only help her in her middle school races.  Madisonn also had a strong performance in the scrimmage meet, finishing over three minutes faster than her first meet last season.”

On the boys side’, there is a mix of old and new faces.  Conner Snapp returns as a 7th grader expecting increased success this season.  He is joined by fellow classmates Josh Bex who ran with the middle school team last season.  Devante Jefferson, Jesse Johnson, and Will Kelsch are all 6th graders, but have experience running at the middle school level.  Johnson and Kelsch ran for Augusta Middle School last year as a fifth grader, while Jefferson ran for Mason County MS last year.  Two other new faces are fifth graders Eli Cline and Grayson Miller.  Both ran on Augusta’s elementary team last year.

“All our guys had strong a strong showing at our scrimmage meet,” Litteral said.  “Conner actually ran a 5K, and Devante ran about 12:30.  Will set a PR by 40 seconds which was impressive while Jesse is starting the season much improved from where he started last year.  Grayson, while just a fifth grader and fairly new to running has been doing very well and shows real promise.”  Bex and Cline both missed the scrimmage due to injury/illness.

“We’re excited to have seven boys and be able to compete as a team.  If our boys continue to work hard and stay healthy, I’d like to think they have a chance to be competitive at some meets this year,” Litteral said.

The team opens its season on Augusta 29 at Pendleton County.
